How many driving lessons do you really need?

There is no fixed number — how many driving lessons you need depends on you. These points show what is legally required and what actually makes the difference.

Only part of it is legally required

The following special drives are mandatory — everything beyond that depends on how confident you are behind the wheel:

  • Theory: 14 double lessons of 90 minutes each (12 basic + 2 for class B)
  • Practice: 12 special drives of 45 minutes each — 5 on rural roads, 4 on the motorway, 3 at dusk/in the dark
  • On top of that come practice lessons as needed — after your first drives we will tell you honestly how many

As of 2026, according to the German driving-student training regulation (FahrschAusbO), without guarantee.

Our guide values

From experience, we use these three scenarios as a guide for class B:

  • Fast: about 18 driving lessons
  • Average: about 24 driving lessons
  • With more practice: about 30 driving lessons

These are guide values from our experience, not a guarantee — yours may be more or less. Work out your own scenario in the cost calculator.

What the number depends on

  • How often you drive: regularly rather than with long gaps usually saves lessons.
  • Prior experience, for example with a moped or on private roads.
  • How confident you feel driving — taking your time often pays off in the end.
  • The traffic you practise in: a quiet small town usually needs less practice than dense city traffic.

Who decides when you are ready?

Your instructor only suggests the test once they see you driving confidently — not after a fixed number of lessons. That way you go into the test more relaxed, instead of too early.
